Oregon Pedestrian Accidents

The Oregon Department of Transportation maintains statistics on the various types of accidents that occur each year, as well as the number of injuries and fatalities. According to these statistics, pedestrian crashes are among the most dangerous types of collisions that occur on our state’s roadways. In 2020, there were 768 reported pedestrian accidents. In these accidents, 698 people were hurt and 78 were killed. This amounts to a greater than 90% injury rate for all pedestrian crashes in Oregon during that year.

The reason for the dangerousness of these accidents is easily explained. Pedestrians have no protection from the impact of the accident as they would if they were in a car or another type of vehicle. The pedestrian typically takes the entire impact of the crash and pedestrian accidents occur suddenly and often at high speeds, leaving the victim little time to make any evasive maneuvers.

Following an Oregon pedestrian accident, victims are likely to have questions about their legal rights. If you have lost a loved one, you may also have questions. Under Oregon law, victims and their families may be able to bring a legal claim for personal injury or wrongful death depending on the facts of the case. If you or your loved one were not at fault in the accident, then you may be able to assert a claim for compensation. Such compensation can help offset the many unexpected expenses that you have during this time and can assist in securing a better future for yourself and your family.
