Sweet Home, OR (May 16, 2022) – The Oregon State Police responded to a deadly crash in Sweet Home on Saturday afternoon, May 14th. The collision occurred along Highway 20 near the intersection with Liberty Road.
According to a report from the scene, a 79-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman from Huntington Beach, CA were killed in the crash. Police say that a Mazda 3 operated by a 33-year-old man was traveling eastbound on Highway 20 when the car veered across all lanes of traffic and went onto the westbound shoulder. The driver then corrected the vehicle back into the eastbound lanes when it crashed head-on into a silver Nissan Versa driven by the 79-year-old man.
Both the 79-year-old man and his passenger were killed in the crash. The 33-year-old driver was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A 4-year-old passenger in his vehicle was transported with critical injuries.
Several bystanders stopped at the scene to provide treatment until rescue crews arrived. The crash caused the highway to be closed for about 4 hours while police investigated the collision. At this time, it is believed that impairment played a role in the accident.
The investigation is still ongoing at this time. No further details have been released.
We wish to offer our most sincere condolences to the victims and their families following this fatal car accident in Sweet Home.
