They were organized and efficient and took the time to explain a process that I was fully unfamiliar with.
“I recently used Johnson and Taylor, Person Injury and Family Law to assist me in divorce proceedings. Brittany Sumner and her paralegal, Stephanie Kincaid, provided excellent service and expertise. They were quick to respond to questions via email or phone and were able to schedule appointments in a timely manner. I highly recommend this practice and will use them again in the future should I have need for legal representation.”

Melissa and Bryan were absolutely wonderful when handling my divorce.
“There was a lot of debt that needed to be sorted out, but they were both confident and positive that things would be straightforward, but were always prepared if things were to become more difficult. They made the process as painless and easy as possible, and were communicative and very patient with me and all of the worries I had. 10 out of 10, I can confidently say that I would happily work with them again if I ever need another divorce”

How Is Child Support Determined in Oregon?

Oregon uses statewide child support guidelines to calculate how much each parent is expected to contribute toward their child’s financial needs. The calculation is intended to account for both parents’ financial circumstances, the child’s day-to-day needs, and how parenting time is shared between the parties.

Some common factors that may affect child support calculations include:

  • Each parent’s income. Wages, self-employment earnings, commissions, bonuses, and certain other income sources may be considered.
  • Parenting time arrangements. The number of overnights each parent has with the child can affect support calculations.
  • Health insurance costs. Courts may consider the cost of providing medical, dental, or vision coverage for the child.
  • Childcare expenses. Work-related daycare and childcare costs may be included in the calculation.
  • The number of children involved. Support obligations may change depending on the number of children requiring support.
  • Existing support obligations. Courts may consider spousal support or child support obligations from other cases.
  • Certain benefits received by the child or parent. This can include qualifying for Social Security or veterans' benefits in some situations.
  • Union dues and mandatory employment expenses. Certain required deductions may be factored into available income.

While this formula provides a framework for calculating support, disagreements can still arise regarding income calculations, parenting time credits, self-employment earnings, or requests to deviate from the guideline amount. We help parents review financial records, identify incomplete or inaccurate income reporting, and advocate for support arrangements that accurately reflect the realities of their family’s situation.
